A Few Memories

I didn't know DD as well as some. I only knew her online (MMD posts, group chats, and IM), but she made a difference in my life just the same and I am going to miss her. She was funny, intelligent, extremely loyal to her friends... and her Mets. She was fearless in telling it like it was and she could take it as good as she gave, She and I had more than one go around over baseball. She loved her Mets and I've been a lifelong die-hard fan of "those evil Yankees" (though I now have respect for the Mets, too). We both knew better than to take that stuff too personally. When I was diagnosed with Diabetes a couple of years ago, she took the time to talk with me about it. I was pretty scared, at first, and she told me what to expect as far as changes I might have to make and other things that might happen later on that would be related to it. The most important thing she told me, though, was that I didn't have to be afraid. If I followed my doctor's advice and took the medication I was prescribed, I'd be fine. That Diabetes wasn't automatically a death sentence unless I chose to ignore it or be in denial about it and not do anything to help myself. She was absolutely right. I'm actually healthier now, with Diabetes, than I was three years ago before I was diagnosed... because I followed DD's advice. We shared a lot of laughs, had more than one serious discussion that led to tears (on my part, for sure, anyway), and, quite simply, I loved her... always will. Once you knew her, even a little, you couldn't help but love her. When I heard the song "Friends" by Michael W. Smith yesterday, I immediately thought of her. I hope she knows just how much she was loved by everyone who knew her. Rest in peace, sweetie... Go METS! xx
